The Difference That No Requirement Freerolls Make

The no requirement freeroll tournament is actually the oldest of the freeroll poker tournaments, but because online websites have been trying to make as much money as possible it has quickly become one of the rarest freeroll species. You can find it all the time at websites like Poker Stars which are still giants in the industry, but for all medium and lower level sites it is a rare thing to behold. In order to be considered a no requirement freeroll tournament, there are certain conditions that have to be fulfilled.

Condition #1: No Entry Fee

This might be a bit of an obvious condition considering that most people think the definition of poker freerolls contains within it a proviso about there being no entry fee, but online poker sites do not share that same definition. The definition of a freeroll that is used by online poker sites is one that does not have a cash entry fee involved, but a tournament that you can get into through the payment of reward points counts as a freeroll tournament by most online definitions. No requirement freerolls do not have any type of entry fee associated with them whatsoever and this is what makes them special even amongst freeroll tournaments.

Condition #2: Monetary Prize

The second condition that freeroll tournaments must possess to be called no requirement tournaments is a monetary prize. This is a bit misleading in the opinion of some since a prize is not a requirement but rather an outcome of the tournament, but historically it is an accurate statement. No requirement freerolls are essentially analogous to classical poker freerolls and in classical freeroll tournaments there was always a monetary prize involved. It was the ultimate something for nothing experience and this definition has been corrupted to a certain degree by online websites. Tournaments such as the Hubble Tournament on Poker Stars are not no requirement freerolls because they only offer entries into other tournaments rather than cash prizes.

Condition #3: No Strings Attached

The final and arguably most important condition for a freeroll tournament to be considered no requirement is that it should not come with any strings attached. Some freeroll tournaments will make your prize money a poker bonus and force you to play in order to release it while other sites make you deposit a certain amount of money into your account to be eligible for the tournament. These are not no requirement freerolls, as those tournaments would have no strings attached whatsoever.

Conclusion

Now that you know the definition of a no requirement tournament, you probably realize that there are far fewer of them available online than you expected. Less than 10% of poker freerolls online are true no requirement freerolls and while the other tournaments are useful in a number of ways for both poker site and poker player, it is erroneous to think of them as poker freeRolls in the true sense of the word.
