How to Properly Insert Router Bits

Choosing the right router bits for the job is extremely important; whether it is the perfect upcut wood router bits or the precise metal cutting router bits. Equally important, however, is the proper insertion, adjustment and use of the router guide. These factors will determine the success of a project just as much as the choice of router bits. To get started, this article will explain the proper way to insert router bits.

The first step to any routing project is inserting the router bits. If you are using a corded wood router, you will need to disconnect it from the power supply before inserting the upcut wood router bits or any other type of wood boring bits, unless there is a locking device. Then you will need to grip the lower nut in place and turn the collet until you feel as if the bit will come off easily, and then you are ready to twist it off and add the new bit.

While inserting any new router bits it is always necessary to hold the lower nut in place while tightening the collet nut. This will ring true whether you are using wood, plastic, composite or metal cutting router bits. It is important to make sure the bit is as tight as possible, because if it were to come off while the machine is running it would be turning at a very high rate of speed and could injure someone with potentially fatal results in the worst case scenario.

When you have implemented any new sort of router bits you also want to be sure to take care of the old bits and don’t just leave them sitting around. Always store your router bits properly in a dedicated tool box and be sure they aren’t just rolling around. Router bits sets should be treated liked gold so they can last a lifetime.
